Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars are slated to be released in two consecutive Christmas windows. The films are part of the MCU’s Phase 6, with Avengers: Doomsday set to release on December 18, 2026. In a recent interview, the president of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, explained what differentiates the upcoming Avengers films from the previous ones.
Secret Wars is the most ambitious project Feige is associated with
In an interview with Fandango, Feige explained that fans will relate in a very different manner to Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars than they did with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, which hit theaters in 2018 and 2019, respectively. There’s a clear narrative overlap between the two arcs, something comic book readers will already recognize.
“People familiar with the comic stories see that they will relate. But I will say this: They relate in a very different way than Infinity War and Endgame,” Feige said.
The Marvel boss stated that fans might be expecting the two upcoming Avengers films to have a “similar connection,” but he pointed out that one storyline will lead to the other in a “very different way” before admitting that Secret Wars is the most ambitious project he has ever worked on.
“I think people are expecting a similar connection, and while one certainly does lead into the other, it’s in a very different way. And I will say that Secret Wars is as ambitious a project as we’ve ever embarked on,” he further stated.
In Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos gathers all six Infinity Stones and wipes out half of all life in the universe with a snap. In Avengers: Endgame, the surviving Avengers travel through time to undo the snap, ultimately defeating Thanos, though Tony Stark sacrifices himself to save everyone. Both movies are largely set within a single timeline, without exploring the multiverse.
On the other hand, the upcoming Avengers films will be part of a multiverse saga, which is bigger in scale as it combines multiple universes, bringing in the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Avengers, and potentially featuring dozens of other major Marvel characters. The movies will likely be driven by multiversal collisions, as different timelines and universes clash.
Avengers: Secret Wars is expected to reshape the MCU timeline and introduce a new unified one. With the pressure on Feige to build on the success of Infinity War and Endgame, it remains to be seen if the upcoming Phase 6 Avengers films will live up to the hype.
