The Boys Season 5 keeps getting better and better, and this time, they have simply outdone themselves. The recent episode was nothing short of dramatic, adding more layers to Homelander’s character, and here’s what Eric Kripke said about the infamous Angel scene.

Eric Kripke spoke to The Wrap about Homelander’s breakdown and shed light on the character’s inner conflict. He specifically talked about the Angel scene where Madelyn is shown in a hallucination.

“A psychotic break is on its way. I don’t think things are coming together for him. I think they’re falling apart. Here he is at the highest level of power that’s possible for a human being to achieve, and he’s more miserable than ever. And he’s completely incapable of looking inside himself, where the real problem is. He will continue to look outside himself and look for the next level of power [he] can accrue.

The scene in question is the one where he has an influx of visions of Soldier Boy taunting him and calling him a disappointment. He is paranoid and having a panic attack, unable to think of what’s to come.

For the record, A-train mocked Homelander before being killed by him. The hallucination scene, although laden with gravity and seriousness, is nothing short of meme material, as some pointed out.

Homelander sees Madelyn in an angelic form, where she becomes his inner voice. While he grapples with the censure and critique, Madelyn tells him to ‘baptize’ those non-believers in their own blood. This is a means of reiterating the same ideology by which Homelander goes by. He creates and demands obedience, respect, and admiration through fear. This is precisely the moment where he is completely disillusioned by the thought, and it is scary how the social commentary is on point.

By this moment, fans know that the villain has gotten ahead of himself. He is being made to believe that he is of a divine stature, and he even seems to bask in the idea, literally, no pun intended.

Madelyn’s words strengthen his motive and resolve to seek out the V-1, which would ultimately grant him immortality.

The Boys Season 5 is currently available for streaming on Amazon Prime.
