Why Evil Morty Remains One of the Most Mysterious Characters in ‘Rick and Morty’?

What makes Evil Morty the show’s most complex and unreadable presence.

We all, at some point, thought of the existence of an alternate dimension where Morty is the Evil one, and Rick is basically Morty. And honestly, when Adult Swim and the creators thought of actually making such a character out of hoax and fine imagination, it ended up becoming one of the most interesting topics discussed, after Space Beth, of course.

The debate around the creation and the existence of Evil Morty has been going on for years, and it only gets more interesting as the show reveals more of his motivations. When we saw him for the first time in Season 1, we honestly believed that he was a straight-up villain who enjoyed torturing Ricks from all dimensions.

His Methods Are Ruthless, His Vision Unmatched

But when we think about it that way, it isn’t something ethically wrong given what Ricks do with their Mortys. We slowly understand and realize that Evil Morty is calculated, merciless, and capable of manipulating entire societies to achieve what he wants.

But when his actions are placed in the context of the multiverse and the system he is fighting against, the story becomes far less black-and-white. In a universe where Ricks dominate every major structure of power, Evil Morty is the first Morty who refuses to accept the hierarchy he was born into. That refusal shapes everything he does, for better and for worse.

There are obviously many people out there who criticize him for the cruelty of his methods, and that’s fair to do because, unlike ‘Rick,’ he has tortured, imprisoned, and sacrificed countless Mortys in his pursuit of self-freedom.

His destruction of the Citadel wasn’t a gesture of something symbolic, because it was catastrophic, wiping out an enormous number of Ricks and Mortys in a single move. His willingness to kill, deceive, and manipulate shows a level of emotional detachment that makes people uncomfortable. And when we think of him from this angle, the “evil” label makes a lot of sense.

His Certainty Leaves No Room for Conscience

He is operating outside any moral boundaries, acting with the single-minded certainty of someone who believes nothing matters except his own end goal.

But again, that is just the evil part. And just because he is evil or shown evil doesn’t mean it’s out of conditions or terms. Fans and audiences have also made concrete statements and have looked at the other side of this ‘debate,’ that is, why he became this way. The Central Finite Curve wasn’t just a cosmic prison for him because it was layered as a reminder that all Mortys exist to be inferior, disposable, and used as emotional shields for all the Ricks.

That system was built by Ricks to guarantee they are always the smartest beings in the room, and the suffering of countless Mortys is simply considered part of its structure. Evil Morty grew up inside that machine of exploitation and decided to tear it down instead of accepting his place in it. And if you ask me, well, that is symbolic too. Yes, his methods are extreme, but his motivations are rooted in a desperate desire to escape a cycle that was never designed to give Mortys any agency at all.
