How Dipper Pines Gave ‘Gravity Falls’ Its Heart

Dipper’s earnestness and curiosity are what truly give the show heart.

Alex Hirsch’s ‘Gravity Falls’ is a one-of-a-kind series that was made by Disney. It definitely looks like a kid’s show, but it is not. You need to sit down with a pen and a paper to solve cryptic codes that were shown on the end credits of every episode. Every show has a leading character, and in this case (Sorry Mabel), it’s Dipper Pines who is inspired by the creator himself!

Audiences and fans call him the beating heart of the Pines family. He is a 12-year-old kid who is constantly stressed, over-caffeinated, and clutching journal number 3 by the unknown author (Well, now we know it was Great Uncle Ford). Sure, monsters, time-traveling warlords, and triangle demons crash into the story every other day, but Dipper is the one who looks at all that and goes, “Yeah, let’s investigate that.”

For those who still don’t know, his birth name is Dipper “Mason” Pines (a fact he guards like it’s a cursed relic), and he gets his nickname from the Big Dipper-shaped birthmark hidden under his hair. He starts the series at 12, becomes 13 by Weirdmageddon, and is voiced by Jason Ritter.

As we know that Dipper arrives in Gravity Falls with his twin sister, Mabel, expecting a normal boring summer with their Grunkle Stan. But instead, he finds a mysterious journal, which makes him realize that the town of Gravity Falls is basically a cryptid convention with property taxes, and decides he’s the only one responsible enough to uncover the truth.

There is no doubt that he is smart, logical, and way too genre-savvy for someone of his age. Dipper is the kid who is constantly worried he is not “grown-up enough” and absolutely judges people… but in a very relatable 12-year-old way.

His mysteries aren’t the only things driving him insane, because he desperately wants to prove himself. Whether he is trying to impress Wendy, earn Stan’s trust, or live up to the expectations of Ford, Dipper’s always reaching for something bigger. Ford even asks him to stay in Gravity Falls as his apprentice, which is basically a “You are smarter than half the adults I know” badge of honor.

But for all the supernatural experiences Dipper chases, his greatest strength is his sister. Sure, he has a tendency to panic and easily gets jealous of Robbie. But whenever he makes a terrible decision, his sister and, of course, Soos are always present.

Yet, when it truly matters, he is braver than anyone in the room. Whether he is facing off against Bill Cipher when no one is looking around, trusting Mabel even when everything looks doomed, or choosing family over personal dreams, Dipper always comes back to what’s right.

He may not have Mabel’s glitter explosions or Stan’s “I definitely filed taxes; why do you ask?” Confidence, Dipper represents something far more deeper. It is his undying determination and spark of trying something new, while promising himself that he will never lose himself while growing up. Gravity Falls may be full of monsters, but he is the proof that sometimes the bravest hero is just a kid with a journal, a flashlight, and a whole lot of questions, along with a twin sister.
