Henry Cavill surprised everyone during the holiday season by posting pictures of himself in Christopher Reeve’s classic Superman costume, which signified his return to his iconic superhero character that started his career in the DC Universe. ‘Henry Cavill. The original Superman suit. This photo. It was undeniable,’ Zack Snyder said in his Instagram post, saying the pictures were indeed taken from the same shoot, which made ‘Warner Bros. and Everyone Agreed Henry Was Superman’ in the DC Universe with Man of Steel in 2013.

The actor played Superman in a trilogy of movies, including Man of Steel, Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League, but then took a five-year break, which left many wondering about his fate. He made a cameo appearance in Black Adam’s post-credits scene in 2022, which hinted that he may soon be seen in a solo movie. He revealed through an Instagram post that he is back as Superman, saying, ‘I am back as Superman. Thank you for your support, and thank you for your patience. I promise it will be rewarded.‘ He then revealed his enthusiasm about his new role as Superman in an interview on Happy Sad Confused

However, Cavill’s comeback was derailed by a big shake-up at DC Studios. James Gunn and Peter Safran took over the company and launched a reboot of the DC Universe. As a result, Snyder’s continuity was effectively scrapped. Gunn went on to explain that the timing of Cavill’s comeback announcement made the situation “unfair” because they already had a “new Superman” in David Corenswet to roll out. While the timing was poor, Gunn and Cavill both conducted themselves with dignity in this situation. It is clear that maintaining continuity is impossible in a universe as broad as the DCU.

Yet the change in creative direction did not mean that the relationship between Gunn and Snyder remained unharmonious. Gunn asked Snyder about the details of the new Superman costume design, including the question of whether the red trunks would be included in the costume. Supergirl will be the first leg of the new DC Universe in summer 2026, with the Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow coming thereafter. This will be in the aftermath of Cavill’s post and Snyder’s accompanying photos commemorating his performance.
