Conan O’Brien closed out the 2026 Oscars with a sketch that ended with MrBeast’s name on the host-for-life plaque, and now everyone is asking the same question: What actually happened, and what does it mean?

The Oscars sketch that put MrBeast’s name in the frame

Conan spent the night roasting Hollywood before the ceremony wrapped with a sketch riffing on One Battle After Another, the film that picked up several awards on the night, including Best Picture. The bit shows him being promoted to permanent Oscars host, complete with a corner office, mirroring the scene where Sean Penn’s character, Lockjaw, finally earns his place with the extremist group he has been chasing throughout the film. Just like Lockjaw, the reward turns out to be a trap: the room fills with green gas, and he’s wheeled out and shoved into a furnace.

Once Conan is no longer in the picture, the camera is back on the office door. The host for the life plaque is replaced, and a new name is inserted: MrBeast.

This is even funnier in context. The Oscars are going exclusively to YouTube in 2029. They’ve had a very long run on traditional broadcast television. Conan even referenced this in his opening monologue. He referred to himself as the last human host of the Oscars and joked that next year, a self-driving car in a tux would be hosting. MrBeast is the biggest creator on YouTube. He is the logical punchline for that whole bit.

Earlier in the show, they aired a segment mocking YouTube-style ads, with Jane Lynch appearing in a fake pre-roll ad for a tactical torch. This was one of several nods throughout the night to the fact that the ceremony will move to YouTube in the near future.

There is no confirmation that MrBeast will host the Oscars. This plaque switch is part of their closing segment. With the ceremony moving to YouTube in 2029, this conversation will continue in the coming months.
