Halle Berry’s return as Storm has been one of the biggest “will-she-won’t-she” mysteries surrounding the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, and while nothing is officially confirmed, fans now have a reason to be hopeful once more. Given the promise of Doomsday as an epic showdown between Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and the X-Men, Marvel has already confirmed several familiar faces from the Fox franchise’s mutant movies. However, there has been one notable omission: Storm. Considering Berry’s long and storied history as Storm, the weather goddess, the absence has been deafening, leading fans to speculate endlessly about the actress’s possible return.
During an interview promoting her upcoming movie Crime 101, Berry was asked about her legacy as Storm, and while discussing how much the character meant to her, how important the X-Men movies were, and how proud she was of the themes they explored—outsiders, prejudice, and identity—especially as something she could share with her children, there was a clear affection in her voice as she talked about Storm.
And then came the line that sent fans into a frenzy.
Storm could return later in Marvel
Berry admitted that she wouldn’t be appearing in Avengers: Doomsday… for now. “I think the whole world of the X-Men and being mutants and outcasts. And there’ve been movies that I’ve been proud to have my children watch. They have so much to say that I thought has been really important, especially for my children as they’ve grown. So they’re beloved,” she said, “and while I’m sad I won’t be in Doomsday this round, there are other rounds. And I would do that in a heartbeat.” That one sentence was all it took for us to go from sad to hopeful. Other rounds? That sounds an awful lot like something that could have been said by the folks at Marvel. And let’s face it: we’ve seen actors deny that they’re involved in a project, only to end up appearing in it anyway.
And we already know that Doomsday has some tricks left up its sleeve. Not to mention that reshoots are happening later in the year. And we already have comparisons to other actors, such as Famke Janssen and Jean Grey. She was supposedly involved in the project, even though she denied it publicly. And then there’s the endgame. Avengers: Secret Wars is set to begin production later this summer. And we still have no idea what its cast is looking like. And maybe Storm isn’t appearing in Doomsday simply because they’re saving her for Secret Wars… which could have a huge impact. Storm? Yeah, she still feels very much on the horizon.
