Two of the biggest movie franchises are set for a head-on collision, as Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three remain slated for the same release date. Even the recent release of Dune 3’s trailer hasn’t made Disney budge from its scheduled December 18, 2026, release date.

Disney set for a box office clash with Dune

According to multiple media reports, Disney has stated that Avengers: Doomsday will not move its release date, despite Dune: Part Three hitting theaters on the same day. Insiders in the industry have already termed the impending theatrical showdown “Dunesday,” quite similar to the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon of 2023, when Barbie and Oppenheimer premiered on the same day.

Now, the overlapping demographics of both films are a cause for concern, as neither Disney nor Warner Bros. is willing to yield the holiday release window, which has proven to be profitable for Big-budget spectacles. Many industry experts are expecting potential box office cannibalization as both films are expected to draw massive global audiences.

Part of MCU’s Phase Six, Avengers: Doomsday will bring together multiple superhero teams in the MCU universe to face Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., who will make his return to the franchise in a new role. Meanwhile, Dune: Part Three will explore Paul Atreides’ frustrations as he deals with the aftermath of his rise in power, which triggers a holy war.

Furthermore, the recently released trailer has built up the anticipation for the Denis Villeneuve-directed science fiction drama. The teaser sets the tone with a chilling war cry as it covers key events mentioned in the Dune Messiah storyline.

Moreover, multiple reports have stated that Dune: Part Three will have exclusive access to IMAX screens for a certain period after release. This might give a slight edge to the film in premium format screenings during the opening week.

Despite this, Disney’s confidence implies that Avengers: Doomsday is likely to perform well despite the competition. The projections for this movie have already indicated that it has the potential to be one of the highest-grossing releases this year.

With both studios refusing to move their release date, December 18, 2026, could redefine modern box office rivalries. Both the movies are products of extensive world and character building. So, which movie would you prefer watching between the two? Let us know in the comments section below.
