Five years later, “the gory, epic, moist” story of The Boys has finally decided to come to its end. With the drop of the first 2 episodes of the final season today, the show will be on its way to becoming a victim of its own May 20 finale. Showrunner Eric Kripke made it very clear—this is not just the new season; it is a true Armageddon.
The final battleground: Homelander’s America
This final chapter in the story of The Boys will take place in the land that it has already lost. Homelander’s America will be one where he is in charge and uses his puppet government to establish complete control over the territory.
For their part, Butcher, Hughie, Starlight, and the rest of the resistance will be broken down after being chased around and forced into hiding for the past year in “freedom camps,” as they are “hunted fugitives” in the wake of Homelander’s martial law.
In the final episode of the final season, we will get the resolution of the ultimate task of the series—the release of a virus that would kill all supers. According to Kripke, this will be a do-or-die battle for humanity’s freedom.
The appearance of Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy as a new regular character of the final season of The Boys is arguably the most interesting variable in the upcoming story. Teasing his appearance, Kripke said that we will see this man again, but in the meantime, we can expect him to take the main part in the fight against Homelander because of their complicated and combustible relationship. Whether he will appear on the side of Butcher or be an enemy for both sides is left unknown.
According to Kripke himself, this being the final season means that the writers can afford to have a lot more shocking events than usual without thinking of their possible impact on the next episode.
That is why a lot of major and permanent character deaths are expected during Season 5. In addition to that, the finale is likely to touch on institutional and religious themes as part of the satire of the show. As we now know from the casting of this season, we are to get an additional supe mega-preacher in the form of “Oh Father,” voiced by Daveed Diggs.
Though the series has never been particularly concerned about having a plot line that would be closed, the final season will bring some changes. As Kripke put it, the writers are “really enjoying” the opportunity to finally kill off some characters that had been waiting for this chance for ages.
In addition to that, while the entire history of the series has been full of “kicking the can” in terms of the ultimate battle, the last season will be dedicated to bringing things to an end with the final episode.
For the first time since the very beginning of the series, this one seems to be truly coming to its end. All of a sudden, it does not matter anymore that you may not have watched any previous episodes of The Boys because of its graphic nature. Because of the promises of a conclusive and final fight, everyone who has ever been interested in the series will be tuning in at the beginning of April.
The Boys Season 5 will be releasing weekly episodes on Amazon every Wednesday.
