The much-anticipated Spider-Man: Brand New Day recently dropped its trailer, and fans are excited to see the friendly neighborhood superhero back in action in theaters on July 31, 2026. The trailer also appears to introduce the street-level vigilante, Punisher, in the new film, where he is seen clashing with Spider-Man. As fans are eager to see how the story unfolds for the character, Tom Holland shared his thoughts on Jon Bernthal’s return as the Punisher in the new Spider-Man movie.
Tom Holland is excited to see Jon Bernthal join the Spider-Man franchise
This will mark the first time Bernthal’s Frank Castle shares the screen with Holland’s Spider-Man. The trailer suggests that the pair don’t start on a good note, appearing to be in confrontation. It is worth noting that the two MCU characters operate on very different codes of conduct, with Spider-Man following a strict no-kill moral code, while the Punisher believes in using lethal force in his pursuit of justice.
Talking about Bernthal’s involvement in the film with the Empire State Building’s official blog, Holland said, “I am so excited for people to see Jon Bernthal as the Punisher in this movie. He’s come from a very different world; he’s in the R-rated kind of universe. We’ve basically picked him up and plonked him into our world. And he absolutely sings in this movie.”
Explaining the dynamic between the characters in the upcoming film, he stated that it starts off frosty but gradually transforms into a “big brother-little brother rivalry.”
“It started as this relationship of two people that really kind of hate each other. And then as we started improvising, it became this big brother-little brother rivalry. It might be my favorite dynamic that I’ve ever seen with Spider-Man,” Holland stated.
The film will pick up from the ending of Spider-Man: No Way Home, where Doctor Strange’s spell wipes out the memory of Parker’s existence from everyone who knows him. As Parker starts from scratch and begins rebuilding his identity while trying to reconnect with Ned and MJ, his alter ego is also dealing with a “mutation” that is affecting his powers.
