A new reboot film of the classic crime series Miami Vice is on the cards. Notably, the original show, which ran in the 80s, had already been adapted in 2006, with Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx featuring in the leading roles. Now, the gritty crime drama, showcasing Miami’s seedy underbelly, will be rebooted once again, with Tom Cruise reportedly in talks to play the villain.
Miami Vice could signal Tom Cruise’s return to darker roles
As per prominent industry insider DanielRPK, Cruise is being eyed to play the main antagonist in the reboot of the iconic 1980s TV series Miami Vice. Director Joseph Kosinski will be helming the project for Universal Pictures, and it is being produced by Michael Mann.
“Tom Cruise is being eyed to play the villain in Kosinski’s reboot, which is being produced by Michael Mann—who directed Cruise in his last antagonistic role as a hitman in 2004’s Collateral,” the post from DanielRPK read. Interestingly, Mann is the creator of the original Miami Vice show and also directed the 2006 film adaptation.
Cruise has already worked with Kosinski on one of the biggest box office hits of the decade, Top Gun: Maverick. It also helps that Mann previously collaborated with Cruise on Collateral, which marked his last full-fledged villain role.
Furthermore, the film could mark Cruise’s return to darker roles after playing action heroes for the majority of his career. It seems the actor may be looking to explore more varied territory in the latter stages of his career.
If Cruise bags the role, he could be joining Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler in the upcoming reboot. Both actors are being eyed to play the lead roles of undercover cops Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs and James “Sonny” Crockett. According to reports, the film will draw inspiration from the pilot and the first season of the original TV series, with filming expected to begin this summer.
If Cruise is confirmed, the reboot would boast a stacked A-list lineup—potentially forming a strong recipe for box office success. Would you be interested in watching the Miami Vice reboot? Let us know in the comments section below.
