Timothée Chalamet has been unlucky at the Oscars, with him and his film Marty Supreme failing to win any awards despite nine nominations. Adding to his troubles, the actor was also lambasted in the press ahead of the ceremony for his controversial ballet/opera comments. However, the controversy doesn’t seem to be affecting his career, with the latest reports attaching him to a project longlisted for the 2024 Booker Prize.
Chalamet to produce ‘PLAYGROUND’ by Richard Powers
Although Chalamet was snubbed at the Oscars, he still has a lot of exciting projects coming up. Dune 3 will be hitting theaters on December 18, and now he has been linked to the adaptation of Richard Powers’ 2024 science fiction novel, Playground. The project is being backed by Brad Pitt’s production banner, Plan B Entertainment, along with Brian Swardstrom.
Warner Bros. has officially secured the rights to the novel, adding another literary adaptation to its slate of upcoming releases. The project is still in its early stages of development, with no writer or director currently attached. Once the film moves further into development, Chalamet will likely get first dibs on starring in the lead role.
The novel follows the journey of Todd Keane and his friends at the University of Illinois, navigating love, friendship, and ethical dilemmas as they are swept up in the rapid technological boom of Silicon Valley alongside the rise of artificial intelligence. The book was longlisted for the Booker Prize in 2024.
The project marks another collaboration between Chalamet and Warner Bros., with the actor already headlining the studio’s tentpole Dune series. The major film company has also enjoyed a strong awards season run, with films under its banner such as Sinners and One Battle After Another picking up major wins.
Meanwhile, Chalamet will be eyeing another push in next year’s awards season as he returns as Paul Atreides in the third installment of the Dune series. Furthermore, another major collaboration with a studio like Warner Bros. suggests that Chalamet is still firmly in the hunt for the biggest honor in Hollywood.
