Talk about a fresh return to Middle-earth is gaining steam. A new film within the realm of The Lord of the Rings franchise is in the works, and from the early signs, something bigger could be brewing in the background. The new film, The Hunt for Gollum, is already generating interest among fans, as every rumor about its casting and production is being closely monitored. There are now speculations that the film could potentially evolve into a trilogy, though there is no confirmation from the production.
The search for a new Aragorn
Andy Serkis will direct the film while stepping back into the role of Gollum and Sméagol. Producing duties fall to Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens, the trio behind the Oscar-winning original trilogy. Warner Bros. has now secured the release date for the film, set for December 17, 2027, with production beginning in May 2026 in New Zealand. Screenwriter Philippa Boyens officially clarified that it is not a two-part movie or a trilogy. However, a second, unrelated live-action film is in development.
The story will fill a gap that Tolkien fans have known about for a while now. Rather than picking up from the main storyline, the film takes place between Bilbo’s 111th birthday and Frodo leaving the Shire. Gandalf and Aragorn are tasked with finding Gollum before the servants of Sauron find him. It is a race, and who wins the race remains to be seen.
There are also a number of familiar faces that are set to return for the film. Sir Ian McKellen has stated that the film indeed features Gandalf and that he is more than happy to return to the role. Wood has also hinted at returning for the film, possibly in a framing device, as was the case with Bilbo in The Hobbit films. Serkis, of course, will be taking the lead role and directing the film.
One role that has everyone speculating is Aragorn’s. There are reports that the studio is seeking a younger actor to portray Strider as a ranger. This means that Viggo Mortensen is unlikely to return to the role, though there are rumors that he could appear in a future scene set in a timeline.
Casting for the film is taking place in London and New Zealand. For now, fans of the series are eagerly awaiting the film.
