A lot has happened in Stranger Things Season 5: Volume 1, and honestly, given the finale we just witnessed, fans and audiences have more questions and wild theories. Netflix and The Duffer Brothers chose an ending by showing us a massive power shift and Hawkins on the brink, which pretty much sums up what Volume 2 is shaping up to be.
Vecna’s new strategy of targeting younger children instead of teens sets a darker tone, especially since it mirrors Will’s original abduction in 1983. And suddenly, what we thought was a side character all these seasons turns out to be one of the most important elements of the plot hole.
New Threads Reveal Why Vecna Targeted Holly
We encounter Holly Wheeler’s connection to Henry, aka Mr. Whatsit, which adds a new time wrinkle to the mystery and positions her as an unexpected key in uncovering why Vecna chose Will in the first place.
There are already layers about what we can expect from Volume 2, but the question is how they are planning to unveil such information in one go. In the first episode of Volume 1, we finally get to know the long-teased answers behind Will’s kidnapping, the freeze in time on November 6, 1983, and the true nature of the Upside Down.
The Duffers have hinted that these revelations have been planned for a decade, promising that the early episodes of Volume 2 will dive straight into the origins of the dimension, its link to Vecna, and the growing significance of Holly. With Dimension X now part of the lore, it seems the series is gearing up to connect every major thread, which includes the Mind Flayer to Henry’s transformation, leading into one final explanation.
Now that Will has powers, it also sets a very surprising element. His abilities won’t mirror Eleven’s, and according to The Deadline, Noah Schnapp has teased that the physical expression of them will change as the story progresses.
Volume One’s Ending Already Rewrites the Power Scale
Because the season was filmed out of order, the scenes fans haven’t yet seen were actually his first attempts at showing Will’s powers, which means Volume 2 will introduce a more unrefined version of what he can do. The end of Volume 1 already shifted the balance of power, and now that Hawkins has “two Elevens,” the stakes of every confrontation rise.
It is also affirmative that Volume 2 will push Dr. Kay further into the spotlight. Unlike Brenner, who believed in Eleven’s goodness, Kay believes Eleven is the reason behind Hawkins’ destruction and not the solution. Her obsession with capturing Eleven and secretly using Eight, aka Kali, will force Eleven to confront the repeating cycle of people trying to control her power.
And as we already know, the cast has promised that the finale will deliver the closure we all have been waiting for. Now that we have four major layers that need to be explored intensively, Volume 2 should be unwrapping all the answers we need before the finale hits on New Year’s Eve.
