The 98th Academy Awards have concluded, and all the winners have been announced. One film that created history even before Hollywood’s biggest night was Sinners, which was nominated for a record-breaking 16 Academy Awards. However, for some people, the supernatural horror period drama didn’t win as many awards as one would expect. Legendary Hollywood filmmaker Spike Lee was one of those who wanted “more love” for the critically acclaimed period film.

Spike Lee says Sinners “won already”

There were high expectations for Sinners to win big at the 98th Academy Awards, considering its dominance in the nominations. Whether the film won as many awards as it should have is anyone’s guess, but it still secured a respectable four Oscars on the night—Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Score.

Meanwhile, when Spike Lee was asked about how Oscar night went in an interview with Variety after the event, he replied, “Good,” albeit somewhat hesitantly. The reason for his hesitation was that he expected the gothic horror film to win more awards. “Everybody has their favorites, you know, but I wanted a little more love for Sinners.”

Despite expecting the film to receive more recognition at the Oscars, Lee said it had already made a tremendous impact on “cinematic history,” which, according to him, was a win in itself. “Last night I was telling them, everybody, they won already.”

However, the filmmaker said that his one “big disappointment” was actor Delroy Lindo not winning in the supporting actor category. The veteran actor played Delta Slim, a blues musician who becomes caught up in the story’s supernatural events.

“But, my one big big big big disappointment, my brother Delroy Lindo,” Lee lamented.

Nevertheless, Lee said with conviction that the film’s director, Ryan Coogler, had left an indelible mark on the industry with his film and that his work is something to watch out for in the future. Safe to say, it was a strong night for Sinners, and Coogler could now expect even more major studios to back his future creative endeavors.
