There’s a certain charm about noir films and even series. Such is the case with Spider-Noir, which is set in the 1930s. The TV series has that old-school black-and-white aesthetic, but with Marvel’s twist, except for one thing. The series will now be placed in a different category for awards, and here’s everything we know so far.
Spider-Noir’s Emmy category sparks criticism
Spider-Noir, produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM, will now be featured in the category of Comedy for the Emmy Awards, as reported by MCU Direct.
Now, fans aren’t too happy about this. They ridiculed it on social media channels, and their response isn’t surprising. What is shocking, though, is this misplacement of the series in a different category altogether. The series can be easily defined by its dark, mysterious, and brooding themes. Its trailer would remind you of retro monochrome movies, and that adds to the charm of a noir film.
It features Nicholas Cage in the central role of Spider-Man, who is now a private investigator. He plays the role of Ben Reilly, who has a dual identity of both Spider-Man and the P.I. When chaos ensues, Reilly must revert to his true nature of Spider-Man to fight all odds.
Cage’s get-up and demeanor from the get-go reminded many fans of Humphrey Bogart, on whom his character is modeled. It’s uncanny, especially given the hat and the long trench coat, which becomes quite symbolic of the detective stories and movies from that era of time.
Most notably, the creators took inspiration and influences from The Maltese Falcon, be it Cage’s overall appearance or Li Jun Li’s Cat Hardy get-up. Her aura is undeniable as she channels the Hollywood starlet vibe, which sets the stage for the noir series. What makes a film or TV series noir is the setup of the story in 40s-and 50s, but also, how it projects itself. The use of black and white isn’t merely for aesthetics, as the shades add to the moral ambiguity and darker themes of the entire story.
To place a noir series in a comedy category is quite unbecoming. What do you think about this development? Let us know in the comments down below!
Spider-Noir releases on May 27th, 2026.
