The popular action-adventure franchise Tomb Raider has been greenlit for a new live-action TV series adaptation by Amazon MGM Studios. Sophie Turner will play the protagonist, Lara Croft. However, production of the series has been paused due to an injury Turner sustained while filming.
Turner’s minor injury briefly pauses filming
The TV series adaptation of Tomb Raider is currently in production. However, the lead star has sustained a minor injury while filming, prompting Amazon MGM Studios to briefly pause production until she fully recovers.
“Sophie Turner recently experienced a minor injury. As a precaution, production has briefly paused to allow her time to recover. We look forward to resuming production as soon as possible,” Amazon MGM Studios stated to Entertainment Weekly.
Based on the popular video game franchise revolving around archaeologist-adventurer Lara Croft’s journeys exploring ancient ruins and hidden tombs, production for the upcoming series began on January 15. Phoebe Waller-Bridge will helm the project and serve as the showrunner.
“If I could tell my teenage self that this was happening, I think she’d explode,” Waller-Bridge had stated earlier while expressing her excitement about joining the project, adding, “Tomb Raider has been a huge part of my life, and I feel incredibly privileged to be bringing it to television with such passionate collaborators.”
This isn’t the first time the long-running video game series has received a live-action adaptation. In the early 2000s, it was developed into two films starring Angelina Jolie — Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life (2003). Both films generated revenue above their budgets, with the first grossing more than double its production cost in 2001.
Another live-action reboot followed in 2018, starring Alicia Vikander, which also performed well at the box office. However, this marks the first time the franchise is being adapted into a live-action TV series, with no release date announced yet.
Chad Hodge will serve as co-showrunner alongside Waller-Bridge, while Dmitri M. Johnson will be the executive producer. Along with Turner, the cast also includes Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Bill Paterson, and Celia Imrie.
