Camila Morrone and Adam DiMarco did an interview with Entertainment Tonight. They discussed the season’s ending and addressed Rachel Harkin’s death, and when asked if Nikky’s weakness was Rachel’s downfall, Morrone replied, “Um, it almost destroyed everything for me, but then it doesn’t because Rachel doesn’t have a downfall. She comes out on top. She’s final. Now she’s a final woman. Not a final girl. She’s a final woman. She’s like a, you know, a phoenix. Yeah. Rising from the new witness.Should be thanking Nikki.Yeah. By the way, he helped me find myself. So, think. Yeah. There you go.“
Throughout the series, Rachel Harkin gets a premonition of something bad that’s about to happen, which is precisely what the title says. Instead of ghosts and gnarly creatures, what ultimately ends the character is the generational curse. She has an inner knowing that Nicky isn’t the right person she should be marrying. This is reflected in her having second thoughts about the guy. By becoming The Witness, Rachel can pass the curse to Nicky’s family.
This all started in Rachel’s family around 200 years ago. Her ancestor, Marianne, was left at the altar and was ultimately killed by the curse, but here’s the thing. The lore runs deep, even before this, as the man who was responsible for Marianne’s death passed on the curse to Harkin’s family. There was a pact that was made with Death years ago when a woman was abandoned by her husband at the altar. The tragedy was that the man was killed in an accident, and the woman pleaded to Death; however, there’s a catch.
If the man she is marrying isn’t her true soulmate, it would be the bride who would die as a result of the curse. This is exactly what happens to Rachel and, ultimately, Nicky’s family.
