Michael B. Jordan is ahead in the Oscars game with his nominations. The actor recently won SAG AFTRA Actors Award for Outstanding Male Actor in a Leading Role for Sinners. His journey, however, was not linear, as he explained his acting process recently.
Michael B. Jordan on his acting inspiration
Michael B. Jordan spoke to Complex Pop Culture about his acting inspiration. When asked how his career took off, he said, “I was on a soap opera for four years. That was kind of where I learned the craft a little bit. Because up until that point, I’m just imitating life. The things that I’d seen around me.”
“You know, never took any acting classes, never did anything like that. The traditional route. It was always kinda like learning as you went. Kind of feeling like when are they going to find out I’m not really an actor?“
For Jordan, it all started when his mother had Lupus. He even stated that it was in a hospital that he actually found a lady who felt like he should audition. He was in the waiting room when the lady told him of her two sons in the entertainment industry.
Somewhere in the early 2000s, Jordan landed his role in the soap opera All My Children. He played the role of Reggie Montgomery, and the actor was 16 at that time. The series was broadcast on ABC. The actor looked back to his early days and his humble self, saying:
“The first audition that I went out for, I ended up booking. From that point, you know it was small success to small success, not really knowing exactly what I wanted to do. When you’re young, you don’t really have an ego.”
Almost 13 years ago, Jordan’s career achieved a breakthrough in his collaboration with Ryan Coogler in the movie Fruitvale Station. His role in Sinners is no different, especially with back-to-back nominations that are nothing short of historic.
Sinners is available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
