Hardly a few days into the 2026 anime season, and a shocking surprise has already sprung forth. While engagement was expected from established titans such as Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End and Jujutsu Kaisen, a new and unexpected title is already leading from the front. Sentenced to Be a Hero, also known as Yūsha-kei ni Shosu, created under Studio KAI, started with an astonishing 9.1 IMDB rating.

This reception comes against the show’s challenging background in release. The series had been scheduled for release in October 2025, but had been postponed by three months for further polishing. Within the industry where releases can be adversely affected by delays, it seems the delay worked in favor of “Sentenced to Be a Hero” since it eventually had its release on January 3, 2026.

The essence of the series’ influence lies in the departure from the typical heroic storyline. Instead of embracing the idea of destiny or savior figures, Sentenced to Be a Hero chooses to make heroes a punishment. The series revolves around the life of Xylo Forbartz, a former knight commander who has committed the unthinkable crime of slaying a goddess. His sentence is not death, however, but an immortal assignment to Penal Hero Unit 9004, a band of convicts compelled to fight against the ceaseless encroachments of the Demon Blight.

Such a dark premise has appealed to audiences in search of more mature and realistic fantasies. The series takes an ‘anti-isekai’ approach where it forgoes power fantasies for exhaustion, gray morality, and politics. This begins with an ‘all-too-real’ death that is neither an escape nor an end to forced labor, which gives this series a distinct darkness compared to others of its type.

On the technical side of things, the series has also been receiving acclaim. Under the direction of Hiroyuki Takashima (Mushoku Tensei) in the 60-minute-long debut episode, the anime offers movie-like pacing, tension, and action choreography. While series composition by Kenta Ihara (Saga of Tanya the Evil) gives additional impact to the series’ themes, the soundtrack and the opening theme song, “Kill the Noise,” by SPYAIR amplify the series’ excitement.

The premier continues the story with the Couveunge Forest Arc and the tense relationship between Xylo and the sword goddess, Teoritta. Critics have noted the lack of gratuitous fan service in the premiere and the focus on themes of survival and power. Having 12 episodes in the winter cour, maintaining a 9.1 rating will be tough. That being said, at the moment, Sentenced to Be a Hero has undoubtedly established itself as the series to beat in 2026.
