The future of Scream 8 is already in the works, but it will be made without one of the most important voices of the franchise behind the camera. Kevin Williamson has announced that he will not be directing the next installment of the franchise, opting instead to take a step back after directing Scream 7.
Kevin Williamson Plans to Step Back
In a recent interview with the fan site Hello Sidney, Williamson made it very clear that he will not be directing another installment of the popular horror franchise.
“I’ll probably step back. It’s nice to be part of the Scream family. That doesn’t mean I always have to be front & center. I don’t always have to write or direct… other people can take the reins.”
Williamson said that he decided to direct Scream 7 after Neve Campbell, who is famous for playing the role of Sidney Prescott, urged him to do so. Campbell has been a part of the franchise from the very start, with the film premiering in 1996.
With the production of the seventh movie that came out recently, Williamson now wishes to pursue other creative objectives. He disclosed that he has an original script ready to be directed whenever he is free. He also stated that he is currently working on a new television project based on classic horror characters from Universal Monsters.
Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media Group have not yet made an official announcement regarding the production of an eighth movie in the series.
It was also revealed that Williamson and Campbell discussed the plot of the next movie in the series during the production of the seventh. Apparently, the two had a late-night talk on the set of the movie. According to Williamson, the idea discussed during the talk was a “great idea” for the series’s future.
Marianne Maddalena, the producer of the series, also hinted that if production of the next movie in the series begins in no time, the filming of Scream 8 might begin as early as this autumn.
With Williamson leaving the series, people have begun discussing possible candidates to replace him as the series’ director. Some of the people discussed as possible successors include Christopher Landon and Eli Roth.
