From playing Kathryn in Cruel Intentions to starring in the 2002 Scooby-Doo film, Sarah Michelle Gellar has come far. Her iconic role in Buffy: The Vampire Slayer is unmatched. The actress was all prepped up for the reboot, but she slammed Hulu for the show’s cancellation.

Sarah Michelle responds to “Buffy” reboot’s cancellation

Sarah Michelle Gellar spoke to People about Buffy’s cancellation, saying, “We had an executive on our show who was not only not a fan of the original, but was proud to constantly remind us that he had never seen the entirety of the series and how it wasn’t for him.”

The reboot titled Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale was cancelled by Hulu. They announced on March 14th that they won’t be taking the show forward, and this turned out to be a massive disappointment for both the director and Gellar.

Gellar criticized the executive for his lackadaisical approach to the reboot. Her statement also extended support to Chloe Zhao, who worked extensively on the project.

“That’s very hard when you’re taking a property that is as beloved as Buffy, not just to the world, but to Chloé and me. So that tells you the uphill battle that we had been fighting since day one, when your executive is literally proud to tell you that he didn’t watch it.”

Gellar also revealed the details of what went down before the cancellation of the series. Both she and Zhao attended the Oscars, and it was a big event for the latter. She was nominated for her film Hamnet, and it was around that time that both Gellar and Zhao were informed about the cancellation.

Citing creative differences, the series was axed completely. This is a bummer for most fans who were anticipating the sequel’s release. The sequel was announced in February 2025, and there were reports that the series took almost 4 years to produce. It’s a fair response considering both Gellar and the team worked on it for a year.
