Ryan Reynolds believes the original cinematic Blade deserves a proper sendoff. The actor recently spoke about his admiration for Wesley Snipes and the impact the character had on superhero movies. Reynolds said he would like to see a final film centered on Snipes’ version of Blade. Snipes returned briefly as Blade in Deadpool & Wolverine. The cameo was short but got a strong audience reaction.
Why Ryan Reynolds wants a final Blade story
Reynolds has suggested a grounded, character-focused film that would serve as a farewell to Snipes’ Blade. The tone he imagines is similar to Logan, which provided a more mature ending for Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine.
The idea would focus on Eric Brooks, Blade’s real name, and tell the character’s story in a more personal way rather than a large crossover. Some online discussions have even referred to the potential project simply as ‘Eric.’
Reynolds has often credited Snipes for helping establish the market for modern superhero movies. The first Blade film arrived at a time when comic book adaptations were far less common. Its success showed studios that darker Marvel characters could work on the big screen.
The character’s recent return in Deadpool & Wolverine also reminded audiences how popular the original portrayal remains. Reynolds described the reaction he witnessed during a screening at Comic-Con.
“Sitting in a theatre with that collective effort of essence in a movie that, you know, continuously sort of honors and surprises people in, I think, pretty unique ways. Like, you know, watching it at Comic-Con in Hall H with 6,000 people around, seeing them witness Wesley Snipes break the frame of our camera and come across the screen, it was something I’ll never forget. It’s one of the most emotional things I’ve ever seen, and it’s basically because it’s rooted in redemption, which is, you know, this is a character that they’ve missed desperately, but they didn’t know they missed. So it really, you know, and I said this a few times before, it’s one of the best things I’ve ever seen.“
The actor has spoken about Snipes in a respectful, comedic manner. He even joked that Snipes is his “Marvel father.” This is because of the big role the Blade movies played in Marvel’s early years.
Snipes first portrayed Blade in multiple movies released in 1998. Although a new movie with Mahershala Ali as Blade is currently in development, Reynolds thinks the original version of the character deserves a final movie.
This is something that fans have rallied behind, especially after seeing how well his cameo was received. For fans of the original movie, it would be nice to see one more movie with the original Daywalker.
