A leaked audio recording has thrown a wrench into the already complicated legal spat between Rebel Wilson and her production partners over her directorial debut, The Deb. Apparently, an audio recording in which two members of Wilson’s PR team are discussing ways to damage the reputation of one of the producers involved, Amanda Ghost, has surfaced. And this leak could be a game-changer for the case against Bridesmaids star Wilson.
Leaked audio suggests alleged attempt to frame ‘The Deb’ producer
According to a leaked audio recording that The Hollywood Reporter obtained, digital strategist Jed Wallace and publicist Melissa Nathan can allegedly be heard riffing on ways to swing the legal battle in Wilson’s favour by spreading dirt on Ghost online.
The plan they came up with was to allegedly set up anonymous websites to falsely portray Ghost, the producer of The Deb, as an ST. In the tape, Wallace can apparently be heard telling Nathan to portray Ghost as some kind of “madame” who procures young women for powerful guys.
“We can’t just do, like, oh, she’s a b—-, she s—-,” Wallace can reportedly be heard saying in the leaked recording. “It’s, like, it’s got to be really, really heavy and connected to something that heavy.”
The dispute started back in the thick of production and rollout for The Deb, an Australian musical comedy directed by Wilson that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024. Wilson had accused Ghost and the rest of the production team of trying to block the film’s premiere.
But the producers strongly denied those claims and went ahead and sued Wilson for defamation. In response, Wilson hit back, saying she was being subjected to all sorts of retaliatory actions as part of this same dispute.
Attorneys for Ghost are claiming that the recording could be the smoking gun that proves Wilson has been lying about her involvement in an organized smear campaign against the producer.
“Rebel Wilson has repeatedly denied any involvement in the creation of the smear websites, not just on television but in her sworn legal testimony,” Camille Vasquez, a lawyer representing Ghost, said in a statement.
“We, however, had long suspected that she not only contributed to the malicious sites but that she was the driving force behind them. The evidence we have submitted to the court in California supports that conclusion,” she added.
And all this drama has also had an impact on The Deb—its worldwide release is now hanging in the balance as the whole thing continues to play out in court. It’s anyone’s guess whether this new audio evidence will do Wilson any damage in the ongoing court case.
