Project Hail Mary has hit theaters and is receiving rave reviews. Based on the 2021 science fiction novel of the same name by American author Andy Weir, the film is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Interestingly, the film’s screenwriter, Drew Goddard, had previously adapted another of Weir’s novels, The Martian, which went on to receive seven Academy Award nominations. Now, Project Hail Mary has already reached an opening box office milestone comparable to what Oppenheimer achieved during its theatrical run.
Project Hail Mary delivers strong start at domestic box office on opening weekend
Project Hail Mary has joined the likes of ‘Oppenheimer’ in becoming a non-franchise installment of the last decade to generate $80M+ domestically on its opening weekend. This is the second non-sequel original film to achieve that feat after the Christopher Nolan-directed film in 2023.
The aforementioned development bucks the trend that franchise films are often seen as the ones capable of dominating opening weekends. It further adds fuel to the notion that audiences will show up to watch fresh ideas being translated on the screen. The success of the science fiction drama gains more significance because the film relies more on a single-character, performance-driven narrative, led by Ryan Gosling, rather than a large ensemble cast.
Furthermore, the domestic box office is up 21% compared to 2025, which signifies increased theater footfall. The overall box office rebound signifies a healthier theatrical market this year, suggesting that the industry is gradually recovering after the COVID-19 pandemic and SAG-AFTRA strikes that caused massive disruptions.
Nevertheless, it is still a franchise film that holds the record for the biggest box office opening. Avengers: Endgame garnered a massive $357 million domestic opening weekend in North America, with $1.2 billion generated in global openings. Safe to say that established IPs and franchise films like Marvel movies, Star Wars series, etc., still have a stranglehold on box office opening days.
Project Hail Mary follows Ryland Grace, played by Gosling, a lone astronaut who wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of who he is or why he’s there, and the plot pulls him into a do-or-die mission to save Earth.
