Paul Feig stopped to talk on the Oscars red carpet last night and gave fans of The Housemaid exactly what they were waiting to hear. The sequel is happening, the script is done, and production is closer than expected. Here is everything he shared.

Feig confirms The Housemaid sequel begins shooting this fall

Feig did not leave much to the imagination when asked about the project on the red carpet. He confirmed that the sequel, titled The Housemaid’s Secret, is fully underway, with a production start date locked in for this fall. He is currently in the middle of a rewrite on the script, and both Sydney Sweeney and Michele Morrone are expected to return.

In his own words, Feig told the press, “We’re getting ready to do this sequel called The Housemaid’s Secret and very excited about it. We’re going to start shooting this fall.

The follow-up is based on the second book in Freida McFadden’s bestselling trilogy, with screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenshine returning to adapt it. The story picks up with housemaid Millie Calloway, who finds herself entangled in a dangerous situation with a new employer who is working to frame her for a crime she did not commit.

The first film gave Lionsgate every reason to push ahead quickly. It brought in around $395 million globally on a production budget of $35 million, making it one of the more profitable films of last year’s holiday season. The studio greenlit the sequel in January, though development had already been underway for some time before the formal announcement.

The red carpet also gave Feig a moment to respond to the Bridesmaids reunion taking place inside the ceremony. He spoke warmly about Rose Byrne, who received a best actress nomination for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, describing her as someone who has never changed despite everything she has accomplished. On the question of a Bridesmaids sequel, he said the call belongs to writers Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo, before adding that nothing should ever be ruled out entirely.

Feig also briefly addressed Blake Lively when asked about her ongoing legal situation tied to the It Ends with Us controversy. He described her as someone who is staying focused on what matters most to her, pointing to her family and her role as a mother as the things keeping her grounded through a difficult period.

If the fall production timeline holds, The Housemaid’s Secret is likely looking at a late 2027 release.
