Paul Bettany is offering new insight into the direction of Marvel’s upcoming series VisionQuest, and his comments suggest the project will focus more on character depth than traditional superhero spectacle. Speaking about the show, Bettany explained that the story aims to connect with viewers who have ever felt like outsiders.

“I think that Terry realized and agrees with me that I feel like Marvel gets rewarded when it takes really big swings. And I think he just understood in his bones who Vision is for.” Paul Bettany Explains Vision’s Core Identity

He also said he collaborated with showrunner Terry Matalas to determine the show’s direction. According to the actor, he and Matalas realized that the secret to Marvel’s success was taking huge creative gambles. The actor also said that the story of Vision resonates deeply with his own childhood experiences.

Paul Bettany said, “Vision is for the kid that… I was when I was a kid, this is the kid that felt like an outsider and felt like they had no community that they fit into. And he knew who these stories are for and who Vision is for. And I think we made a really fun and entertaining show about a guy who’s an outsider and trying to find out who he is.”

One of the biggest confirmed developments is the return of Ultron, voiced again by James Spader. He previously played the character in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and his return could potentially lead to some complicated issues for Vision.

Bettany has also commented on Spader’s performance in the scripts, saying it was “delicious.” The show is also expected to explore the complicated relationship between Vision and Ultron, with Ultron acting as a dark father figure to Vision.

The show is also expected to be part of a connected trilogy of Marvel Studios productions, which previously included WandaVision and Agatha: All Along.

Several familiar faces are expected to return for the show. James D’Arcy is expected to reprise his role as J.A.R.V.I.S., with Ruaridh Mollica also appearing as Tommy Maximoff, also known as Speed. The show may also feature appearances by Stark technology such as F.R.I.D.A.Y. and E.D.I.T.H.

VisionQuest is expected to arrive on Disney+ in late 2026.
