In the world of Josh Safdie’s “Marty Supreme,” this kind of distraction could prove costly. The film is a Safdie film, meaning it is a whirlwind of cameras, tension, and energy surges at any given moment. “It was a controlled chaos that makes you stay raw as actors,” Odessa A’zion said of the experience. Timothée Chalamet, playing Marty Mauser, clearly thrives in this environment.

Odessa A’zion reflects on powerful scene work

Odessa A’zion didn’t pretend otherwise, because acting with Timothée Chalamet can be challenging at times. “We’re doing a scene one time, and I’m literally watching him,” Odessa A’zion said during a break at the Actor Awards. “In my head, I’m like… ‘Wait, is he for real? Oh yeah, he is. Wait… oh yeah, I forgot we’re doing a scene.’” The audience laughed at her confession, but it was not a joke. For a split second, Odessa A’zion was not Rachel Mizler. “He brings this intensity that just stops you,” she said of her co-star. Not “admires.” More “in awe.”

In between, the two had found ways to calm themselves. They would hold hands. No acting, no preparation. Just calming themselves. Finding that reset button in the middle of the storm.

The awards season has only intensified the attention. At the BAFTAS on February 22, Chalamet went home with the award, while A’zion was nominated. At the Actor Awards on March 1, both were nominated again. The Oscars are up for grabs on March 15. Though Amy Madigan won the award for ‘Weapons’ Sunday night, A’zion did not bring home the prize. However, she was far from disappointed.

In fact, the actress called the experience a “fever dream,” especially considering the nervous days she had on the set in New York. Though the nervousness has remained, it has changed. It has come with the flash, the fringe, the Giorgio Armani Privé, and the surreal experience of realizing that the actor before you has been so good that you forgot that you’re in the middle of a scene.
