Recently, there has been news about OpenAI shutting down Sora. It’s their text-to-video AI system that allows users to generate video clips. This also facilitated social media interaction, and it aimed at collaborating on a 3-year contract with Disney. Here’s everything we know so far about the AI disaster.

All you need to know about OpenAI’s Sora Disaster

Following OpenAI’s shutdown of Sora, Disney has been looking for a replacement for the AI app. New details have emerged ever since this update was announced, including the fact that Disney wasn’t informed of this sooner.

An hour before the shutdown was announced, the Disney executives were made aware of this situation, which makes it even more complicated. This was confirmed by the Wall Street Journal as of late.

Not only that, Sora was losing hefty amounts of money, which is estimated at around one million dollars per day. The app also received backlash recently from several artists and people who are citing the criticism as a cause for its eventual shutdown.

This, however, is different since Sora and Disney signed a mutual contract in 2025. It called for Sora to develop and generate content using users’ prompts on Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars.

This three-year agreement was aimed at protecting users’ privacy, enabling ChatGPT for the Disney staff, and also platforming the fan-made short-form content on Sora on Disney+.

OpenAI is set to focus on Core AI amidst Sora’s shutdown. The one billion equity investment is something Disney walked out of, according to some reports.

It was on March 24th that Sora app released a statement saying

We know many of you invested significant time and energy into Sora – building not just gens, but also audiences and real communities. Our focus now is on making this transition as clear and thoughtful as possible. Thank you for creating with Sora, for being part of this community, and for coming on this journey. More soon.

Disney has yet to make its statement about its upcoming ventures and collaborations with other AI companies.
