Things aren’t looking all too well in Netflix‘s XO, Kitty universe. The trailer was off to a good start, but it seems like it was all flies and no butterflies, especially with Season 3’s initial low score. What exactly happened here? Well, let’s take a look!
Netflix’s XO, Kitty Season 3’s erratic ratings
When XO, Kitty’s trailer, was released in March, it had everyone all stoked up for Season 3. The recent reviews and ratings, including the Rotten Tomatoes score, prove otherwise.
Season 3 scored around 35% on Rotten Tomatoes, and it’s got fans divided for the most part. While some people blamed Kitty and Minho’s endgame for it, others blamed queerbaiting. There were also netizens who weren’t happy about Q’s trajectory by the end of the season.
This isn’t the first time the show faced criticism. The show itself had pressure to match up to the success and popularity of To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, though it does stand out in its own unique way.
We have Kitty Song Covey, who travels all the way to South Korea to meet Dae, her childhood sweetheart. It follows a sequence of love rectangles up until now, when she finally ends with Minho.
The show also works so well because of its enemies-to-lovers trope. Kitty feels alienated in KISS at first, but soon finds herself among a nurturing, encouraging, and helpful set of friends. She makes mistakes and is a flawed character, which is what makes her lovable.
Season 3 centers on her realizing her true feelings for Minho and their turbulent relationship. They try to understand each other’s worlds; Kitty tries to fit into the glitz and the glam, while Minho shows up for Kitty when she needs him.
A major criticism of Season 3 had to do with the show villainizing Q and how Kitty ended up with Minho. This added to the low ratings, as some fans speculated; however, with the updated Rotten Tomatoes score, XO, Kitty now has an average score of 80%.
XO, Kitty is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
