Netflix is heading back into the world of KPop Demon Hunters. The streamer has confirmed a new project in development, with directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans returning to lead it.
New animated project expands Demon Hunters universe
The animated film KPop Demon Hunters received positive viewer feedback after its release, earning a 7.5/10 rating on IMDb. The response helped the film stand out among recent animated releases.
As a result, there was an immediate call for more from the same world as the story in KPop Demon Hunters. The movie’s positive reception, which incorporated K-pop performance culture and fantasy elements from demon hunters’ stories, has become a topic for discussion on social media, with many wondering if a sequel could be made.
Now, the streaming platform Netflix has announced that the K-pop Demon Hunters universe is going to expand with a new project. The announcement confirms a full-length sequel is in production. However, the company did not confirm whether production had started.
The upcoming sequel will be directed by the same filmmakers, Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, who directed the original film.
The news comes just before the awards push for the movie continues to gain steam. The duo of Kang and Appelhans was just recognised with an Oscar nomination for the movie
The new deal will allow the duo to make new animated movies for the streaming platform. Expanding KPop Demon Hunters is the first project to come out of the new partnership. Sony Pictures Animation produced the original film. However, it has gradually become a huge streaming success.
The streaming numbers also reflect this performance. The movie remained on Netflix’s Top 10 list worldwide for 38 consecutive weeks. During this period, it recorded about 965.5 million viewing hours and 579 million view completions worldwide.
Bloomberg reported in late 2025 that talks between the two companies were already underway, with an initial target release date of 2029 being discussed. Executives at Sony Pictures Animation later said this could change depending on the sequel’s progress.
While information is still scarce on this sequel, it is clear that this is the official start of its next chapter.
