Since ‘Wednesday season 2‘ aired on Netflix earlier this year, everyone has already been speculating about things that were left unanswered. We hear about Morticia’s Raven sister named Ophelia whose death scared her, and now she is more scared, especially given the destiny that Wednesday is choosing for herself. And the news everyone’s been waiting on in the Wednesday fandom finally dropped, and it’s a big one as it involves the mysterious Aunt Ophelia. And it’s safe to say that it’s official that Eva Green is joining ‘Wednesday Season 3,’ and we can pretty much guess why.

We as fans and audiences only got a quick glimpse of Ophelia from behind in the finale scene, but even that brief moment sparked theories, edits, and wild guesses about who might play her. Now we know, and honestly, Eva Green feels like a perfect match for the Addams world.

Why “Wednesday Must Die” Sets Up a Darker Season 3

If you remember how Season 2 wrapped up, Wednesday discovered more about her aunt through that unsettling journal Morticia passed down to her out of love and as a gesture to mend their complicated mother-daughter relationship (or just a silent desperation). Then we cut to her grandmama, Hester Frump, heading into the basement, where Ophelia was being kept in a locked cell, where we get a glimpse of long blond hair, with a red dress, and a very bloody message on the wall that reads, “Wednesday must die.”

As Wednesday’s end monologue speaks about how ‘secrets are the bedrock of the Addams Family… Toxic and festering just below the surface,’ it makes sense while putting a dramatic end and is exactly the kind of mess this show succeeds in. And knowing Eva Green will bring that version of Ophelia to life only heightens the anticipation that we as fans cannot wait for.

The character has always stood out in the entire Addams lore. Audiences who love the classic ’60s series know that Ophelia’s blonde look contrasted sharply with Morticia’s dark, gothic presence. That visual difference becomes even sharper now that Eva Green is stepping into the role, bringing her signature intensity and elegance.

And considering her past work with Tim Burton on ‘Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children‘ and ‘Dark Shadows,’ her stepping back into Burton’s orbit feels almost inevitable and justified.

What makes this casting even more exciting is how long Ophelia has been a mystery in the story. Within the show, she has been missing for a good two decades, assumed gone for good, until that final reveal, which made it very clear that she never left the family.

A Hidden Past That Could Reshape the Addams Legacy

And unknowingly, she was hidden away in the darkest possible corner of it by none other than Wednesday’s grandmama, whom she respects and adores. Season 3 now has the chance to explore what happened to her, why she was locked up for such a long time, and why she is fixated on Wednesday in such a violent way that makes things even more complicated.

And surprisingly, we aren’t the only ones who are thrilled and anxious about it. The show’s creators, Al Gough and Miles Millar, praised Eva Green as someone who brings a haunting, unpredictable edge that exactly resonates with the energy Aunt Ophelia needs. And Green herself seems eager to dive into the weirdness, calling the show “deliciously dark and witty” and promising to add her own brand of eccentricity to the Addams family.

With Wednesday continuing to dominate Netflix’s most-watched lists and Season 3 already building hype months before it even starts filming, Eva Green’s arrival makes this next chapter feel even bigger and grander, as it will give more room to expand the storyline and explore more such characters like they did with Thing and gave us his origin story that Addams Family fans always wanted to know.

And if the finale was any indication, Aunt Ophelia isn’t stepping into the story with any grace, as it’s very much evident that she is walking in with a threat written on the wall and a whole lot of unresolved family history to unravel that will revolve around the destiny of Wednesday Addams.
