Nintendo fans may want to lower their expectations a little because Shigeru Miyamoto has just thrown some cold water on the idea of a Super Smash Bros. movie. After all the recent speculation around The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and its crossover-style cameos, the Mario creator has now made it clear that a big Nintendo mashup film is not part of the plan right now.
What Shigeru Miyamoto said about a Super Smash Bros. movie
In a recent interview while promoting The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Miyamoto addressed the growing fan theory that Nintendo might be building toward a full cinematic crossover. His answer was pretty blunt.
He said that, unlike something like Super Smash Bros., he does not think there will be a situation where all Nintendo characters will join together in the movies. In other words, the dream is not dead forever, but it is definitely not happening anytime soon.
That matters because fans had started connecting the dots very fast. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie reportedly includes bigger crossover-style nods than the first film, including characters and references outside the usual Mushroom Kingdom circle.
That immediately sparked talk of a Nintendo Cinematic Universe and, naturally, a future Super Smash Bros. movie where everyone shows up, and chaos becomes art. But Miyamoto’s comments basically shut that theory down for now.
Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri also backed up that idea in the same conversation, explaining that the team is not approaching these films with some giant long-term crossover master plan.
The focus seems to be more on making each movie fun on its own, rather than treating every cameo as a setup for the Nintendo version of Avengers: Endgame.
So yes, Fox McCloud showing up may be exciting, but no, it is not automatically a Ghost of Smash Bros. Future situation.
That said, this is not exactly bad news for Nintendo’s movie future overall. Miyamoto has still been clear that Nintendo is expanding into film, and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie itself is proof that the company is getting more comfortable playing with its wider universe on screen.
It just sounds like if a Super Smash Bros. movie ever happens, Nintendo wants to take its time instead of rushing every iconic character into one giant crossover event. For now, fans are getting cameos, not a full battle royale.
