Owen and Teddy are leaving Grey Sloan Memorial. Kim Raver and Kevin McKidd confirmed on March 25, 2026, that they are exiting Grey’s Anatomy after the Season 22 finale on May 7. McKidd is leaving after 18 seasons—Raver after 12.

Nearly Two Decades and a Happy Ending on the Way Out

McKidd joined Season 5 back in 2008. Raver came in the following season in a recurring role, was promoted to series regular, then left after Season 8, returned briefly in Season 14, and has been a full-time series regular since Season 15. The two have been the central on-again, off-again couple for most of that time.

Army surgeons who met in Baghdad, became best friends, took years to act on their feelings, finally married in Season 18, had two kids, then divorced at the start of Season 22 before recently starting to reconcile.

Shonda Rhimes is promising a happy ending. “It is both bittersweet and joyful to give this couple the happy ending their story deserves,” she said. Showrunner Meg Marinis left the door open for future appearances. “While their story is coming to a close, this is never truly a goodbye.”

McKidd is also the one directing the finale that sends them off. That’s his 48th episode behind the camera on the show. Raver has directed three. Both of them have said the show shaped them as directors, and they both credited Debbie Allen and Rhimes specifically.

Grey’s Anatomy has been a huge chapter of my life, creatively and personally,” McKidd said. “Playing Dr. Owen Hunt and directing on the show have both shaped me enormously.”

Raver said playing Teddy Altman will “always hold a dear and special place in my heart.” The exits are being called a creative decision by everyone involved.

The show hasn’t been renewed for Season 23 yet, but it’s expected to come back with a slightly reduced episode order and budget cuts. Losing two long-running salaries helps with that math, even if that’s not the stated reason.

Only Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr. are left from the original era cast. Owen and Teddy were among the last characters created during Rhimes’s hands-on running of the show. With them gone, the series moves into a genuinely new chapter whether it wants to or not.

Three episodes left before the finale. May 7 is the last day for Owen and Teddy. For now, anyway.
