With Hoppers’ $46 million debut, Pixar is off to a great start this year. The movie isn’t your run-of-the-mill animated movie but packs relevant themes and messages. John Hamm agrees with this, especially given his latest comments about his character, Mayor Jerry.
John Hamm’s observation about Hoppers’ Mayor Jerry
John Hamm, in an interview with Discussing Film, made interesting observations about his character, Mayor Jerry. He said,“What he does, though, which is a great lesson that the film highlights, is that he is able to change his mind. He sees kind of the error of his ways. He sees that there’s a different perspective on what’s happening, and he’s able to kind of go, “ Maybe I was wrong,” and that’s a pretty adult human response that I think a lot of our current leaders don’t necessarily have, which is unfortunate.”
Hamm voiced the mayor and brought those nitty-gritty details to life. Mayor Jerry has aspirations and goals, and for that, he is willing to trample on the animal colony.
That is, until Mabel steps in and acts as a voice of reason in the movie. Her actions serve as a bridge between humans and beavers, made possible by her biology professor, Dr. Samantha “Sam” Fairfax.
The Hopper technology is almost metaphorical, as it allows Mabel to put herself, quite literally, in the beavers’ shoes. It is an allegory of empathy if one were to put it that way.
Hamm also made comments regarding the social message and commentary of the film, where he said, “It takes its time, and it lets the audience kinda realize, along with a lot of the characters as well, including Mabel, you know. Mabel is very set in her ways at the beginning, and she goes on a journey as well.“
Rather, the movie is an exploratory journey shaped by transformation. Mabel, Mayor Jerry, and other characters finally understand that coexistence between the two species is possible.
