James Gunn has again plunged headlong into the digital debate regarding the future of the DCU—and this time, not all of the comic book fans were happy with what he had to say. In a message posted on his Threads account on January 18th, 2026, the co-CEO of DC Studios addressed the rising rumors about Superman: Man of Tomorrow, giving the fans of the comic book series a welcome splash of clarity in the guise of a letdown for those hoping for just a meeting of the DC Trinity.

Instead of leaving fans surprised and puzzled with unexpected cameos of characters such as Batman and Wonder Woman, Gunn announced that the next release in 2027 would surely focus on Clark Kent instead. This announcement effectively ended all speculations that had been going around online for weeks.

Trinity, Cameos – None

There were rumors circulating in the industry scoop community and fan circles about Warner Bros. having hidden auditions for their new Batman and Wonder Woman in preparation for their arrival in Man of Tomorrow, which Gunn addressed head-on. All those rumors about Batman and Wonder Woman auditions are false.

When pressed for additional details as to what the character might resemble in order to determine whether or not they appear in the film in any way, Gunn had the following to say in response to the question: “Yep.”

The confusion seems to be from a casting call for one of the major female characters. Gunn has recently said that one of the characters definitely isn’t Wonder Woman, but there are rumors flooding the fan community that it could conceivably be Maxima, Big Barda, Jenny Sparks, and a couple of others.

Although lowering the expectations for the launch of Trinity, Gunn expressed his continued attention to Man of Tomorrow: Brainiac. The director confirmed that the most important news in the film, not the crossover, was the casting news for Lars Eidinger to play the legendary Superman villain.

Additionally, Gunn has announced that the next volume will have characters from 2025’s Superman, and the current casting call for those characters will not be for leads. Visually, there has been a huge improvement in the hiring of cinematographer Sam McCurdy, who has worked on Shōgun and Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and is one of Gunn’s usual collaborators.

Gunn also took this opportunity to speak about the absence of Batman in the future of the DCU. It was mentioned in a presentation by Gunn in relation to the future of the DCU.

“I don’t want to cloud the Batsphere until after The Batman Part II,” he stated. This is in line with Gunn’s plans up until now on not wanting multiple Batman series airing at the same time. As for the upcoming movie The Brave and the Bold, which is the Batman series within the DCU, it will not proceed until the script is written and Gunn approves it personally. Gunn went on to add that the Dynamic Duo series will proceed as the Elseworlds story without any adjustments to its positioning within the DCU. The reaction to the fan community has been a bit mixed, as there are those who are disappointed that there isn’t a continuity experience.

However, the sentiment reflected in Gunn’s statement is certainly in line with his philosophy on the world. Gunn’s decision to strip away the Justice League duties of the character in Man of Tomorrow certainly makes it clear that he doesn’t want to suffer the same fate as the previous DC movies in rushing the formation of a superhero team. Whether that will ultimately work out for the best is a bit too soon to tell at the current moment, but one thing is for sure—the next movie is all about Superman and Superman alone.
