James Cameron’s Avatar franchise has become a global cultural phenomenon. It shaped storytelling and filmmaking. The third installment left fans asking for more, and this is what Cameron had to say about a potential fourth film.
James Cameron shares update on Avatar 4
James Cameron recently attended the Saturn Awards organized in Los Angeles on March 8. He spoke about his plans and an update on Avatar 4, which was confirmed by ScreenRant. The director said that he has yet to decide whether there will be a 4th film, but it seems “very likely.”
When asked by Cinema Blend about how ready he is regarding Avatar 4 and 5, Cameron said, “I mean, artistically, I’m ready. I mean, we have to evaluate how well this film does, what the appetite for it is, and so on. If we get lucky, then we’ll talk about staging and production and so on, and when we wanna do it.“
Avatar has had three movies, with Fire and Ash being the latest. The third installment was released in 2025 and reflected a major portion of the lore. The worldbuilding of Pandora is yet to be expanded upon. The first movie, released in 2009, shed light on the Na’vi people and Jake Sully’s entry into the Omaticaya clan.
Way of Water gave viewers a peek into the Metkayina clan. They’re free divers and are more connected to the ocean. The whole clan’s life is built around the ocean. The third movie, Fire and Ash, broadened worldbuilding and lore. It underlined Eywa’s role in Avatar and also introduced the Mangkwan clan, led by Varang.
The clan works with fire and ash. They built their lives around the volcano, especially after their normalcy was disrupted. The fourth movie will mark the return of Mangkwan and other pivotal characters. The film is scheduled for release in 2029, as confirmed by 20th Century Studios.
Cameron also jokingly stated that he is 71 years old and that he cannot “plan the next 25 years.” This was regarding the director wanting to work on projects other than Avatar.
