J.K. Rowling has been known for her controversial views on TG rights. In fact, when one of the cast members of the upcoming HBO Harry Potter series, Paapa Essiedu, recently signed an open letter criticizing a UK Supreme Court ruling that limited legal recognition of TG people, there was speculation online that he might be removed from the show due to clashes with Rowling’s views. However, the renowned writer took to X to address the speculation and put it to bed once and for all.

Rowling doesn’t have authority to sack actor

The writer of the Harry Potter series has made it clear that Essiedu will continue in his role as Snape in the hugely anticipated Harry Potter series. Rowling stated that she doesn’t have the authority to sack an actor, and even if she did possess the power, she wouldn’t exercise it.

“I don’t have the power to sack an actor from the series, and I wouldn’t exercise it if I did,” Rowling wrote on X. Explaining the rationale behind her statement, she added that she doesn’t believe in firing people who hold different opinions from hers.

“I don’t believe in taking away people’s jobs or livelihoods because they hold legally protected beliefs that differ from mine,” she further added. Her statement conveys the fact that creative and casting control lies with the production and not with her.

Rowling’s comment comes amid ongoing controversy over her views on TG issues: Her outspoken views on gender identity debates since 2019 have been criticized by some as harmful and exclusionary. The writer’s views have even led to disagreements with actors from the original Harry Potter franchise, like Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson.

Nevertheless, the new Harry Potter series is expected to premiere in early 2027. The story of the magical world of Hogwarts will be retold with a completely new cast. Each book will be adapted into a season by HBO, leading to a deeper exploration of the Harry Potter lore.

The long-form TV adaptation will allow the creators to focus more on the backstory of many characters and will potentially allow fans of the book to form deeper connections with some of the characters who didn’t get much attention in the franchise films.
