Pixar’s latest release, Hoppers, has created quite the buzz ever since its premiere. The movie was in the middle of a controversy earlier, and it seems like the producer has finally spoken out. She recently addressed the issue in an interview.
Hoppers’ producer clears the controversial air
In a conversation with TheWrap, Hopper’s producer, Nicole Paradis Grindle, opened up about the film’s environmental message. She said, “Everybody was interested in the general idea of making a film in nature… Some people were invested in that possibly being the focus, and in the end, I think that is underlying everything. But nobody ever told us to tone it down.”
This was regarding a Pixar artist claiming that the team was “forced to tone down and downplay the environmental message in the film.” This was revealed in The Hollywood Reporter in 2024. Hoppers outlines the relationship between animals and humans. The film walks us through the strained relationship between beavers and humans that Mabel seeks to rectify.
Mabel becomes somewhat of an equalizer in her move to protect the beavers from humans’ greed and need for destruction. This also stems from her stance as an animal advocate, which is evident throughout the movie.
Through Hopping technology, Mabel can bridge the gap between humans and animals as a whole. Earlier, in 2025, Daniel Chong denied and refuted these claims in an interview with ScreenRant, where he said, “I did not experience being censored or being told not to do things. Every movie here goes through so much iteration and changes a lot.”
He reassured me that the things he wanted in the movie are still there. The comment also spoke to his creative freedom and liberty, especially after rumors of pressure building around the movie.
Both Chong’s and Grindle’s statements debunked claims about the Pixar film. In light of the recent controversy, though, Hoppers paved the way for storytelling and creativity. Not only that, the movie reached up to $88M in its first global release, beating Weapons’ record.
