HBO CEO shares update on Baldur’s Gate series

Casey Bloys, HBO CEO, spoke to Radio Times about the fate of the Baldur’s Gate live-action series. He (Mazin) gave an update regarding the series, saying, “He’s deep into season 3 of The Last of Us—but Baldur’s Gate was something he brought to us. He’s very passionate about it, and he’s thinking about it, and we’ve talked about it, but he’s going to focus on The Last of Us, and then come back to [Baldur’s Gate] when he’s got more time.”

Craig Mazin was announced as the showrunner behind the series in February 2026 and is currently working on the final season of The Last of Us. According to reports, the series will wrap up the entire storyline within the third season. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey will return to the final season.

Pascal, who plays Joel in the series, will return in a cameo role, according to speculations, as his character was killed off in the second season. The series is slated for release in 2027, though the date has yet to be announced.

As for Baldur’s Gate, the live-action will focus on the aftermath of the events occurring in Baldur’s Gate 3. The game followed a group of travelers in a D&D setting. The worldbuilding is fashioned after that; hence, we also see parasitic insects that are similar to mind flayers. They must find a cure for this and follow up with several challenges in the game. It also includes either following the party or betraying them and taking the reins as an Absolute.

The release date and the cast for Baldur’s Gate are yet to be announced; however, it would be interesting to see how it would all pan out!
