The Harry Potter trailer dropped, the premiere date is confirmed for Christmas 2026, and everyone wants to know one thing. Who is playing Voldemort? HBO CEO Casey Bloys has an answer, and it’s not the one fans were hoping for.

Bloys Is Telling Fans to Stop Believing the Rumors

No, we have not. As a rule, I would say any rumors, don’t believe them. I don’t even know who we’re casting. I really don’t! I would take everything you read with a grain of salt,” Bloys told Variety.

That puts an end to the Cillian Murphy rumor, at least officially. Murphy already denied it multiple times. Paul Bettany said nobody from Warner Bros. ever even contacted him.

There was a rumor floating around about a female Voldemort. There were lists. None of it was real.

The reason it’s not urgent yet is timing. Voldemort doesn’t appear in full until Goblet of Fire, which would be Season 4. Season 1 only needs him as a face on the back of Quirrell’s head and a voice.

Insider Daniel Richtman reported the voice actor has already been cast, just not announced. That tracks with where production actually is right now.

The show still needs a full Voldemort for when Tom Riddle appears in Season 2 as a young boy and for flashbacks like the Godric’s Hollow scene. Set photos from last year already showed a Godric’s Hollow sequence filming. Ralph Fiennes played the role from Goblet of Fire onward in the original films.

Fiennes himself said Murphy would be a great choice, but Murphy has shut that down.

The full cast, otherwise, is sorted. Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Arabella Stanton as Hermione, Alastair Stout as Ron, John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Snape, Nick Frost as Hagrid. Essiedu is already dealing with death threats online over his casting.

Voldemort’s announcement is coming. Just not yet. Christmas 2026 is the premiere, and there are still months of production left. Bloys is not worried. Fans are a different story.
