Fans of the ‘Mummy’ franchise have been clamoring to see their favorite actors reunite on the big screen again, and now it’s going to happen. According to recent reports from Universal Pictures, John Hannah will be rejoining Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz in the upcoming fourth installment of the ‘Mummy’ franchise. The news broke on March 27th, and this is the moment that fans of the franchise have been waiting for. The fact that the original trio of the franchise will be reuniting in the upcoming film is not just a piece of casting news; it’s a promise of where this story is going to go.
Inside the Reunion: ‘The Mummy 4’
John Hannah’s reunion with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz in the upcoming ‘Mummy 4’ is something that will get fans of the franchise really excited, as Jonathan Carnahan was not just comic relief in the film but also a part of the heartbeat of the franchise.
This is also where things get interesting. Although many people online are calling it a reboot, the studio is calling it a legacy sequel. The directors, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, are taking the helm to guide the film as a direct continuation of the first two films, essentially ignoring The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor altogether. This alone has already won over a large chunk of the fanbase, especially since Weisz is now firmly back in.
As for behind-the-scenes work, David Coggeshall is taking over script duties, and producer Sean Daniel is returning to guide the film. Production will start in August 2026, with London and Morocco being key locations. The release date is already locked in for May 19, 2028.
There is some talk online about a separate Mummy film being produced by Lee Cronin, but it is a separate entity and has no relation to this one.
For the fans, though, it is simple: With the original three now back, it feels like The Mummy is finally picking up where it left off and not starting over.
