Emily Blunt explained that there would be much more in Steven Spielberg‘s new sci-fi thriller than just a spiritual sequel. Namely, according to the actress, the upcoming film will deal with events that occurred after mankind first encountered aliens.

Emily Blunt explains ‘Disclosure Day’ answers ‘Close Encounters’ questions

Talking to Empire, Emily Blunt said, “Definitely answers some of the questions posed in Close Encounters.” Apparently, the director did not focus on the wonders of first contact in his 1977 hit but explored the consequences decades later in his new project.

As the actress hinted, the plot will shed light on what became of people taken into custody, what the reason was for the government’s massive efforts to keep everything secret, and what the true intentions of extraterrestrial civilizations regarding humanity were.

Steven Spielberg referred to Disclosure Day as the complete opposite of War of the Worlds, where aliens are invading Earth. Instead, this time the picture focuses on people’s discovery that their planet has been shared by aliens all along for quite a while.

According to the plot, Emily Blunt portrays Margaret Fairchild, an ex-investigative reporter now working as a weather reporter in Kansas City. Her life will change forever during one of the broadcasts of a TV station when something horrifying happens in the sky, and people all around the globe witness it.

Following the event, Margaret resorts to journalism again, and together with a truth seeker played by Josh O’Connor, she uncovers an enormous conspiracy orchestrated by several governments.

For the director, the film can be considered a psychological thriller rather than a traditional space adventure. Spielberg said he wanted to explore how religion and the whole society crumble with the proof of extraterrestrial existence revealed.

The script was written by David Koepp, who previously cooperated with the director on such films as Jurassic Park and War of the Worlds. Other actors joining Emily Blunt and Josh O’Connor are Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, Colman Domingo, and Wyatt Russell.

Disclosure Day is expected to hit the theaters on June 12, 2026.
