The New York Comic Con video that was brought back into the limelight is like a Zapruder film analysis of the fandom as a whole, and at the very heart of it is Henry Cavill and the prospect of his arrival in Westeros. There is even some insider speculation that Cavill is to be cast as the legendary “King Who Bore the Sword,” Daemon I Blackfyre, part of House Targaryen. The fact that he was killed many years before even the Dunk and Egg story arcs began gives Cavill a good shot at making a grand entrance as part of lavish flashbacks, especially of the Battle of Redgrass Field.
There is even a certain level of poetic justice that is to be found within this casting call. There has long been a certain tradition of fans wanting to see Henry Cavill as Aegon the Conqueror within the larger Game of Thrones universe. The fact that he is to be cast in the role of the tragic “Pretender King” and that it would give Cavill the look of a Targaryen with silver hair is something that HBO would be more than happy to engage with.
Insider chatter suggests Henry Cavill could appear on HBO
The video was recorded in October 2025 but went viral in February 2026. There were two main reasons for the video’s popularity. First, Dexter Sol Ansell stated that they would keep the spoilers a secret until “the respective Episode 3.” This is because the production rumors indicate that the third episode of the season has the most important scene of flashbacks. Second, Peter Claffey’s “Oh god no” statement, which led to him cutting off Dexter Sol Ansell’s “No no, just think we can say that Henry Cavill,” does not seem to be a friendly statement. It is NDA-related.
Peter Claffey compared Dunk to the character played by Henry Cavill in the Witcher series. Henry Cavill played the character of Geralt of Rivia. Peter Claffey stated that Dunk is a “less confident Geralt.” This is a really interesting statement, especially when one considers the fact that Henry Cavill recorded the Blackfyre flashbacks in Ireland in 2025. This was a training session, which is why the statement is on his mind.
However, HBO is not commenting on the matter, but they have not issued any takedown notices. This is because the second season is still in post-production, and Henry Cavill has more important things to worry about, such as the reboot of the Highlander series. This is why the cameo was a two-week shoot.
It is referred to as a “legacy cameo.” This is because it is a well-thought-out internet-breaking reveal to establish the mythic significance of the Blackfyre era while giving the audience the blonde Cavill they have been waiting to see for a decade.
