David Fincher’s ‘The Adventures of Cliff Booth‘ will be skipping theaters and going straight to streaming, with Netflix announcing that it will be available in August 2026. The news has already generated quite a lot of debate among fans, particularly due to the scale, budget, and association with ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.’

Netflix-only release sparks debate among fans

The movie, written by Tarantino and directed by Fincher, has been announced as a streaming-only experience, as opposed to a theatrical experience. The initial reports had indicated that Netflix was planning to give ‘The Adventures of Cliff Booth’ a more ‘robust’ theatrical experience, though this has now been downgraded quite significantly.

The fact that it will be available in August means that it will miss out on both the Cannes Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival, which is quite unexpected given the stature of Fincher as a filmmaker. The strategy is in contrast to other big-budget productions, including Greta Gerwig’s ‘Narnia,’ which is said to be receiving a wide release in IMAX.

For many, this raises questions regarding Netflix’s strategy, especially considering the $200 million budget for the film, which is said to be the highest for Tarantino to date.

The film takes place in 1977, about eight years after the first film, and sees Cliff Booth become a Hollywood ‘fixer,’ having moved from his role as a stuntman. Brad Pitt reprises his role in the film, marking his first collaboration with Fincher since 2008.

Though Leonardo DiCaprio and Margot Robbie are not reprising their roles, the film boasts other big names in Hollywood, including Timothy Olyphant, Elizabeth Debicki, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Carla Gugino, Scott Caan, and Holt McCallany.

As excitement for the film continues to grow, many are wondering whether or not this film belongs on streaming alone.
