Fans of the Star Wars universe will remember the dangerous Sith weapon, Darth Maul, who made his first appearance in the franchise in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. The only other live-action project he has featured in is Solo: A Star Wars Story, where he appears briefly as a hologram toward the end, revealing himself as the true leader of the Crimson Dawn crime syndicate. Now, Dave Filoni, a protégé of George Lucas, has opened up about plans to explore Maul’s story in greater depth—bringing to life elements of the character arc that Lucas had originally envisioned in the upcoming animated series Maul – Shadow Lord.

Maul – Shadow Lord will honor elements of Lucas’ unfulfilled vision

Notably, Maul’s story arc already exists in animations like Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. Between these animated series and Solo: A Star Wars Story, the former Sith Lord survives after a near-fatal battle with Obi-Wan Kenobi, eventually going on to lead an underground galactic mafia network called Crimson Dawn.

The unexplored gap between The Clone Wars and Solo: A Star Wars Story is where Maul – Shadow Lord likely fits in. “George [Lucas] and I had had some talks about Maul over the years and what his plans for Maul had been. And so I felt [Maul—Shadow Lord] was a way of honoring that future that we were going to have and finally bringing some of it to light,” series creator Filoni told StarWars.com.

The plot of the animated series will specifically focus on his “Shadow Lord” phase, where he expands his influence into the underworld, rebuilding his criminal syndicate on a planet beyond the control of the Empire after his fall on Mandalore. Furthermore, he comes into contact with a young Jedi Padawan there who might just help him in his pursuit of revenge.

Giving a rough idea of what the audience can expect from his upcoming animated project, he said, “I wanted the style to be a bit more aggressive, a bit more edgy, a bit more painterly than everything we had done.”

The first season will be released on Disney+ with a two-episode premiere on April 6, 2026, followed by two episodes each week, leading to the finale on May 4. Are you excited to watch Maul – Shadow Lord? Let us know in the comments section below.
