Within the bright glare of the Academy Awards 2026, Conan O’Brien did exactly what every great Oscars host has ever attempted to do: he felt the room and struck at exactly the right moment. This time, it was in the form of a joke about Timothée Chalamet that has quickly become the most talked-about joke of the night so far.
The Joke That Cut Through the Noise
Conan O’Brien quickly addressed the extremely tight security at the venue in a very sharp and witty way in his opening monologue. “Security is extremely tight tonight. I’m told there are concerns about attacks from both the opera and ballet communities… They’re just mad you left out jazz.”
The camera immediately cut to Timothée Chalamet, who looked at it in laughter and nodded his head in agreement, taking it in stride as he sat next to Kylie Jenner.
The joke wasn’t exactly a one-off. For weeks, the talk of the town has been Timothée Chalamet’s comments about ballet and opera being “dying arts” and that “no one cares about anymore.”
O’Brien explained that the situation could have been awkward had they chosen to ignore it. By bringing it up, the room was able to reset. He said he “had to,” adding, “Just to let the air out of the room, and then we all can have a good time.”
His solution was quite simple: acknowledge the situation, add a twist, and move on. By bringing in the element of jazz, O’Brien was able to expand the joke enough that it remained light and never went after the situation.
It also gave way for the rest of the evening. By having Chalamet as a major contender for the Best Actor award for Marty Supreme, O’Brien made it quite clear that no one, not even the front-runner, was off-limits.
It is quite interesting to note, however, that the joke did not end there. As the evening progressed, it seemed that the show itself had a part in the story.
The ballet routine featuring Misty Copeland later in the evening raised a few eyebrows. It seemed as though the show itself had something to say about the situation. Whether or not this was the case, the situation kept the controversy alive.
