At the New York premiere of The Bride!, Christian Bale finally spoke about the news that a new adaptation of American Psycho is in production under the guidance of Luca Guadagnino.

Christian Bale reacts to the upcoming American Psycho

Instead of sounding territorial about his iconic role as Patrick Bateman, Christian Bale took a remarkably light-hearted approach to the situation. Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Christian Bale wished the new team all the best but pointed out how difficult it is to step into an iconic role. “Whoever wants to give it a shot…” Bale said. He called the new adaptation a “bold choice.” He also spoke about, “if they’re doing a remake or what; I don’t know anything else about it. How he respects people.” Bale joked that he has always been a fan of “brave people” and wished them all the best.

The conversation was also an opportunity for Christian Bale to look back on his experience working on the original film. Directed by Mary Harron and released in 2000, the original adaptation of American Psycho was a cult classic. It took Bret Easton Ellis’s controversial 1991 novel and made something darkly satirical and comical. Christian Bale spoke about how he still had “fantastic memories” of working on the original film. It was a film that would go on to become one of the definitive portrayals of narcissism in corporate culture.

The new adaptation is not a remake but a new interpretation of Ellis’ original novel. The script is being penned by Contagion writer Scott Z. Burns. Rumors are that the new adaptation could go deeper into the horror and violence present in Ellis’ original book. The 2000 film had to make a lot of compromises in order to receive an R rating. Actor Matt Ross, who played Luis Carruthers in the original film, called the reboot a “business venture.” He also acknowledged that different interpretations are possible since Ellis’ original book is a novel.

The current project of Christian Bale is receiving great reviews. Directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, The Bride! is a film that is earning critical acclaim for Christian Bale’s physically transformative turn as Frankenstein’s monster.
