Cameron Diaz appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on March 31, 2026, and she confirmed what most Shrek fans already knew was coming. But the moment that got the most attention from the interview was not the confirmation itself.
Diaz Corrected Jimmy Fallon on Fiona’s fate, and the Audience Loved It
Fallon asked her about returning as Princess Fiona, and someone in the audience called out that Fiona is actually a Queen now. Diaz admitted she had completely forgotten that Fiona leveled up over the course of the franchise. Once she was reminded, she turned directly to Fallon.
“You will address me as such!” she said, pointing at the host. Fallon jumped to attention and apologized. “Getting scolded a lot on my show tonight!” he quipped.
The actual confirmation came just before that moment. When Fallon asked if she was returning, Diaz said simply, “I am, yeah. We’re doing the fifth Shrek. Can you believe it? It’s like two decades.”
She also shared a story about what happens when parents tell their children that she is the voice of Fiona. “One time, this little girl just looked at me and burst into tears. Bawling her eyes out. Her mom’s like, ‘I’m so sorry.’ I’m like, ‘I really don’t take it personally.’” She added that she now tells parents not to mention it.
Shrek 5 has been moved around quite a bit in the release schedule. It was originally set for July 1, 2026, then pushed to December 23, 2026, and is now slated for June 30, 2027.
The film is directed by Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon, who co-directed Shrek 2. Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy are both back as Shrek and Donkey. Zendaya is joining the cast as Felicia, Shrek and Fiona’s teenage daughter.
The casting of Zendaya was confirmed during a teaser trailer in February 2025, and it immediately shifted the conversation around the film toward what the next generation of the franchise might look like.
Diaz coming back after nearly a decade away from Hollywood is the other part of the story. She returned for Back in Action with Jamie Foxx in 2024 after stepping away from acting in 2014. Shrek 5 is her second comeback project.
The film hits theaters June 30, 2027. And for the record, it is Queen Fiona. Jimmy Fallon now knows.
