Anne Hathaway passed up the opportunity to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe by rejecting a role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Reportedly, she was offered the part of an “older female antagonist” in the film. However, the door to the MCU isn’t completely shut for Hathaway, as the latest reports suggest she is now in talks for a “major role” in the MCU’s Phase 7.

Will Hathaway be part of the MCU’s next saga?

According to a popular scooper, MyTimeToShineHello, Anne Hathaway could be part of the MCU’s next phase after the Multiverse Saga. This would position her in the post-Secret Wars era of Marvel, and the role is touted to be significant and not a one-off cameo.

“After rejecting a role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Anne Hathaway is now in talks for a MAJOR role in the MCU’s next saga,” the user wrote on X. The new saga after the multiversal chaos is set to reshape the MCU timeline, with the central focus shifting towards X-Men, mutants, and new cosmic entities. At this point, these are just conjectures, as Marvel hasn’t officially confirmed any details about its next phase.

However, it seems like Marvel is determined to make Hathaway a part of its future storytelling plans. It must be noted that big superhero franchises aren’t foreign to her, as she has already played Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises. With Marvel’s track record of signing A-list talent for the phase launch roles, The Devil Wears Prada actor wouldn’t be a bad call to build hype and excitement among fans.

The development comes after the actress’s rejection of a villain role in Spider-Man’s upcoming installment. As per industry insider Jeff Sneider, the role was offered to Hathaway and Succession star Sarah Snook, but both rejected it, prompting the studio to rework or scale down the villainous role. “Sometimes you have to listen to the talent… if the talent’s not responding to the character or role… I think that they pivoted a little bit,” Sneider said, adding, “maybe they rewrote it, made it a smaller part, got an older man to play it instead.”

Hathaway’s rejection seemed to have a significant creative impact, with suggestions of the role being rewritten. This flexibility in the creative direction of Marvel Studios implies that adaptability is key to their success.
